Choose Your Attitude
Everyday when you wake up in the morning you have a choice as to what sort of day you are going to have just by choosing the right attitude.
A few weeks ago i did a post to our Fitness Boxx private Facebook group. I wrote about how we recently relocated our gym. As a consequence of the move there were a lot of disruptions. Disruption to the business but also to the members.
Often when we have “disruptions” in our life we use them as excuses not to do something.
In this instance we found the attendance had dropped in our classes. Part of this was due to the fact that we said there would be disruptions so people chose not to come to the gym to help us out, but also part of this was because their routine would have been effected some what so it was an excuse not to train.
The point of my post was that yes everyone has disruptions in their life but it is our attitude towards those disruptions that ultimately determines our success or not.
Our attitude drives change and creates choice!
You have a choice as to how you are going to react to people, a choice about how you are going to speak about yourself, and to other people.
There are so many things that distract us from being present in the moment and actually appreciating what you have.
Social media for example, reminds us of what everyone else is doing, what is happening thousands of miles away, we are constantly told how we should be living or what we are meant to look like!
Over time, this becomes our new norm, it becomes easier to focus on the negatives and let these things drive our day rather than taking control of our day, the way we want.
Part of breaking this cycle is choosing your attitude
In an instance you can be going from having a bad day to an awesome day just by adjusting your attitude.
We are fortunate to live in an awesome country where you can pretty much do whatever you want (within reason), no one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to do anything.
Start by choosing your attitude
Your Attitude towards your day
Your Attitude towards your food and what you put in your body
Your Attitude towards your self talk
Your Attitude towards your health and exercise
Your Attitude towards your time!
Control what you can control
We get bombarded with so much information on a daily basis. Most of which is completely useless to us. A large portion of this is negative and completely out of our control.
Unfortunately though we can get caught up in it and worse still, take it on and focus too much energy on it.
When we focus on things out of our control this can lead to overwhelm, stress and anxiety which does not serve anyone.
A simple example of focusing on what we can’t control is the weather. We have absolutely no control over the weather at all. If we are worrying about what the weather is going to do everyday we may get very stressed out and may waste a lot of energy on something that we have no control over.
If you have control over something then it is worth focusing your energy on it to improve it or change it. If you can’t control it then it is a lot of wasted energy and will only lead to worry and anxiety.
There are times when things might seem out of our control, but if we break these situations right down we may find some sense of control in our own way. An example of this might be global warming. I am no scientist and am no authority in this area so for me to make people change the way they live is going to be next to impossible.
But what i can do is control my own actions. I can make sure i recycle properly, use a Keep Cup instead of having a takeaway cup every time i have a coffee. If everyone did this then this would make a big difference.
Remember lots of little changes make a MASSIVE difference!
What things do you worry about? What things do you get stressed about or have anxiety about? Do you actually have any control over these things?
If not, work on letting them go and focus your energy on things you can control.
Focus on what you can control.
Let go of what you can’t control.
Time To Breathe
Apart from the obvious breathing is so important for so many other reasons. Yes we need oxygen to survive but most people stop at that.
Most people have no awareness of how they breathe. Most people take their breathing for granted because it is so engrained into us.
It might sound stupid, but i want you to think about how you breathe. Take time out of your day and just breathe and be aware of how you breathe. Do you take long slow breaths, fast short breaths. Just by being present with the way your breathe will automatically help improve your breathing
It is like talking to someone about posture, straight away their posture will improve without telling them how to sit or stand.
Focused breathing helps calm the nervous system. It helps transport oxygenated blood around the body, it helps bring more clarity when thinking and making high level decisions. It calms the mind and body which is super important, especially with our busy, stressed out lives.
While meditation is super beneficial, it’s not what I’m talking about here. I am saying that we need to be more conscious and focussed on the way we breathe.
Try going for a walk, bike ride or swim and feel how you breathe. Try directing your breath to different parts of your abdomen and see how it feels.
Do activities that are going to increase your heart rate a little bit and force you to increase your breathing rate. Just by taking time out of your day to focus on your breathing is going to help change your mindset and energy levels!
Playing is such a great learning tool for kids. It teaches them team work, hand-eye co-ordination, work ethic, resilience plus so much more.
Then at some stage we decide to stop playing and start working are arses off!
I get it! Our priorities and responsibilities change but all the benefits of play are still there. We will still learn, it still improves our hand eye co-ordination, builds resilience and it is still fun.
It is really important that we take time to play or learn a new skill. It might be going out with the kids and playing soccer or it might taking your girlfriend out and going rock climbing. Maybe it’s learning how to juggle or play guitar.
There are obviously the physical benefits, but there are also a lot of emotional benefits as well. Taking your mind off the daily grind and focusing your attention on something new is very important.
So get outside with the kids, go and try something new and fun. Take up a new sport and play!!
As mentioned earlier we are bombarded with so much information, then throw on top work commitments, family commitments and social commitment. It seems so much of the time we are doing everything for everyone else, rather than looking after the person who should take priority: ourselves.
It seems that we are trying to fill our time rather than valuing our time with more purposeful activities.
It is really important to take time out alone. For me i like to go for a run. I put no expectations on the run. Sometimes it is far, sometimes it is just 20mins. But it is my way of clearing my head with no distractions and gives me the the opportunity to process what has happened during the week.
Time alone does not have to be activity based. You might like to lie on the beach or just sit and read a book. Find something you enjoy that takes very little mental focus. Make sure that you are getting at least 20mins a week where you take time for you and see how it improves your daily mindset.
